The original Data Protection Act was introduced in 1984 but only covered information held on computer systems. The 1998 Act is a modified version to cover information held on both computer systems, and in manual filing systems.

Organisations became liable under the 1998 Act in March 2000, but had until 23rd October 2001 to check that new data and files complied with the Act.

Organisations holding Manual data captured prior to 24th October 1998 have until October 2007 to ensure that this data is compliant with the Act.
