Input/Output activity is slow and the traditionally remedy was big block sizes and lots of buffers. The system now exploits a number of Address Spaces specifically to speed processess by eliminating I/Os. This requires sufficient amounts of Central and Expanded Storage if real I/Os are not to be replaced by Paging I/Os.
